Email Instructions

1. To attach your Microsoft® Word® resume: When you have an email message screen open, click anywhere inside the message area. On the pull-down menus, go to INSERT, then down to FILE (It looks like a paper clip in Outlook). Navigate through your computer until you locate your resume file. Click INSERT and your resume will become an attachment.

2. To attach your resume as a PDF file: PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It makes it possible for documents that have been created with various software to be “portable:” readable and printable on almost any system. To create a PDF file of your resume, you will either need to purchase Adobe® Acrobat® software, or go to Adobe's Web site. There is a section on the site called “Create Adobe PDF Online” that allows you to convert most file formats to PDF in your browser. The PDF Reader can be downloaded free at adobe.com. Once your PDF file is generated, attach it to your e-mail message just as you would any other file..

3. To create an ASCII text file that can be pasted into the message of an email...

  1.
    1. Open your resume and re-save it under a new name.
    2. Select all your text and convert it to Courier 10 point type, left justified. Courier is a “fixed width” font that is common to almost all systems.
    3. Eliminate your tabs. (If your resume is formatted in columns, sorry, you will have to do without. To make different sections stand out, you can capitalize titles or insert extra space.
    4. Eliminate any hard returns that come in the middle of a sentence. (In Microsoft Word, use the ¶ tool to locate them.)
    5. Set the left margin at 1" and the right one at 2" This will make your résumé look good when you paste it into an e-mail message.
    6. Replace bullets with * or +. (Bullets aren't available in ASCII.)
    7. Save your new resume. In Microsoft Word, choose "Save As" then pull down the arrow next to "Save as type" to view the options. If you're e-mailing your résumé, select "text only with line breaks". If you're pasting your résumé into the body of an email message, choose "text only." In Microsoft Outlook, go to Tools>Options; “Mail Format” tab and choose "Plain Text." In Eudora, uncheck the “Word Wrap” option. In Microsoft Outlook Express, change the “Automatically Wrap Text” option to 65 characters.
