Assembly Job Description

Assembly workers use their hands and many types of tools and machinery to put together everything from car parts to electronic equipment to airplanes. Assemblers may work alone or as part of a production line team to build components or finished manufactured products.

Job Duties

Entry level assembler jobs may not need to have any special technological knowledge or skills, whereas advanced mechanical assembler jobs require computer skills and the ability to operate specialized equipment or machinery, such as motion-control assembly robots. Here are a few of the most basic duties required in an assembly position:

  • Assembling components according to specifications and instructions
  • Keeping productions area clean and safe
  • Tracking materials and products
  • Documenting production and quality control reports
  • Inspecting assembled products for quality control
  • Maintaining tools and equipment
  • Troubleshooting mechanical problems
  • Keeping inventory of product and materials

Assembler Skills and Job Qualifications

Assembly job requirements vary by type of position and employer, but jobs for assemblers generally require the following abilities:

  • Basic reading and math skills
  • Must be able to follow written or spoken instructions
  • Full range of motion with your hands (manual dexterity)
  • The ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Heavy lifting
  • Good vision (with or without glasses or contacts)
  • The ability to work together cooperatively (for jobs on an assembly line team)
  • Flexibility (assemblers may be trained on multiple job functions)
  • Skills with a variety of power tools and small hand tools
  • Soldering skills may be required for some jobs

Experience requirements will vary from no experience required for entry level positions to several years of previous assembly operations work experience for more advanced positions.

Training and Education

For entry level assembly jobs a high school diploma or GED is usually required. Inexperienced workers who are hired in an entry level assembly position will receive on-the-job training. More technologically advanced jobs may require specialized training or certifications from a technical school or college. Advanced assembly and fabrication jobs are likely to require an associate’s degree or higher.
