Keys to Success in Today’s Job Market: Flexibility, Reliability & Dedication

Mar 13, 2017

“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” –Jesse Owens, a track-and-field Olympic legend and 1976 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

While, statistically, only a few of us will ever become record-breaking athletes, this advice by Jesse Owens is relevant to any employee who has professional ambitions. Just as athletes condition and train with objectives in mind, employees who want to find success in the workplace can set attainable goals and resolve to make them happen. If we take what Owens says to heart, the sky’s the limit!

Goals don’t have to be complicated. They can be as straightforward as getting a better job or moving up within a company you’ve been already been working with.

At Friday Services, we’re committed to helping you make your dream a reality—no matter how big or small. Everyone we work with brings a different set of skills to the table and with dozens of jobs available right now, we will help you find work that helps you meet your goals.

While many factors can lead to success in the workplace, we’ve found that attention to three key areas of flexibility, reliability, and dedication can show an employer or hiring manager that you’d be a good fit for the job or promotion.

Flexibility

Last month, an article published by The Balance, an online financial empowerment platform, made the point that “Employees who approach their job with a flexible mindset are typically more highly valued by employers. Flexibility on the job includes the willingness and ability to readily respond to changing circumstances and expectations.”

The ability of employees to modify their approach to tasks when needed is a big plus for employers. Every workplace—whether it’s industrial or administrative—has its share of unexpected tasks or changing priorities. Coming to work with an open mind and ability to adapt means less stress for you and for your employer.

Many jobs require flexibility when it comes to shift availability and pay rates. Be sure to communicate any challenges to shift times or dates with the Director of First Impressions at Friday’s, but remember that it may limit what is open to you.

Reliability

Arriving to a job on time (or even early) may sound easy, but so many people disappoint their supervisors and slow down the workflow by showing up late day after day. According to a survey conducted at the end of 2016 by job search website CareerBuilder, more than one in four workers admit to being late at least once every month, and 16% are late at least once a week.

Paying attention to punctuality not only means less stress on your team, but it also means you become more reliable at the workplace and you can be trusted with new responsibilities. Those who prove themselves to be reliable workers are more likely to get promoted within their company and earn the respect of their colleagues.

If you’re an administrative assistant who is in charge of data entry, answering phones, filing, email correspondence, and scheduling meetings, your reliability is critical to ensuring that everything runs smoothly all day long.

Being on time for interviews is also super important as it means you’re invested in the possibility of a job. Read about this tip and others in our blog post, How to Prepare for a Job Interview.

Dedication

Dedication is more than just showing up. It’s about being productive, giving 100% of yourself to the job at hand, and going above and beyond what is asked. When employees are enthusiastic and positive, the company can be more successful and viable.

When you show loyalty and support for the business where you work, it makes a difference! Dedicated employees who have a healthy work ethic can take advantage of opportunities for professional development, which adds skills to their toolkit.

As a valued employee of Friday Services, dedication can also pay off with our Employee Benefits Program, which includes skills improvement training, holiday and vacation pay, and medical and life insurance for qualifying employees. When workers adhere to company policy and procedures, everyone benefits and safety is ensured. At Friday Services, we award a Safe Worker Certificate to recognize employees who work eight weeks and 160 hours without an on-the-job accident or injury.
