According to the International Association of Administrative Professionals, there are now more than 22 million administrative and office support professionals working in the United States. To honor all the work these individuals do every day, we will celebrate Administrative Professionals Week the last full week in April, and Administrative Professionals Day on Wednesday, April 26th.
At Friday Staffing, we are always searching for qualified candidates for administrative assistant jobs in Western North Carolina. Local employers from medical and non-medical offices call on our team to recruit administrative assistants when they have job vacancies.
In addition to offering general office support, such as answering phones and filing records, administrative assistants help workflow processes flow smoothly and keep everyone organized.
The History of the Day
Because of a decline in birthrate during the Depression Era (1929–1939) and an increase in the number of businesses after WWII, there was a need for more skilled administrative personnel in the 1940s. To help with this shortage and to recognize the contributions of administrative personnel, a nonprofit professional networking and educational organization known today as the International Association of Administrative Professionals began in 1942 as the National Secretaries Association.
In 1962, the US Secretary of Commerce Charles W. Sawyer proclaimed June 1–7 as National Secretaries Week and the day was sponsored, in part, by the National Secretaries Association.
In 2000, the observance was renamed Administrative Professionals Week to include other job titles in addition to the role of secretary.
Real Stories of an Administrative Assistant
Kimberly R works as office manager with a wholesale distributor for kitchen and bath cabinetry. She says that when she moved to Western North Carolina from Raleigh in 1999 after high school graduation, she was drawn to this line of work because it matched her personality and skillset. “I am an extremely detail oriented person,” says Kimberly. “I like the details and I am highly organized. These skills serve me well in this position.”
In August 2016 Kimberly reached out to Friday Staffing for a job. By September 1, she was hired on in a temp position, which became full-time on February 1, 2017. Her days are fast paced and filled with every aspect of administrative assisting, everything from answering the phones to processing payroll to bookkeeping.
Never a Dull Moment!
Though she had worked for construction businesses before, Kimberly had never been in the cabinetry industry. On-the-job training has helped her learn all that she needs to know—and she says she’s still learning. “I love interacting with people,” says Kimberly. “Here, I get to interact with clients, contractors, vendors and my co-workers. We are a small company with only four employees. Everyone must do their part to keep things organized and running smoothly.”
As the assistant to two owners, Kimberly has become accustomed to multitasking and, when attention is needed on a task, she can stop what she’s doing and ensure that everyone’s needs are being met. “Then I can go back to what was doing and complete the task.”
